About
We started The Creative Independent with a simple belief: creative work deserves to be talked about honestly.
We started The Creative Independent with a simple belief: creative work deserves to be talked about honestly. Not the highlight reel. Not the hustle-culture platitudes. The real thing — the doubt, the process, the quiet satisfaction of making something that didn't exist before.
What We're About
This is a publication for people who make things. Designers, writers, photographers, illustrators, indie makers, and anyone else who's chosen the beautiful, complicated path of creative work. We publish practical guides, honest essays, tool recommendations, and the kind of advice you'd get from a talented friend over coffee — if that friend had been freelancing for a decade and was willing to be candid about the hard parts.
We cover the craft, the business, and the life behind creative careers. Because knowing how to kern a headline is important, but so is knowing how to price a project, survive a creative block, or build an audience without losing your mind.
Why We Exist
The internet is full of creative advice, but most of it falls into two camps: surface-level inspiration that sounds good but doesn't help, or dense business content that treats creativity as a problem to be optimized away. We wanted something in between — content that's genuinely useful, written by people who understand what it's like to stare at a blank page and need to make something good by Friday.
Every article we publish passes a simple test: would this have helped us when we were figuring things out? If the answer is yes, it goes live. If it's generic advice you could find anywhere, it doesn't.
Who's Behind This
The Creative Independent is a small, distributed team of working creatives. We write, design, photograph, and freelance ourselves — which means we never publish advice we haven't tested in our own careers. Our contributors include illustrators, brand designers, UX researchers, editorial photographers, and writers who've collectively spent decades navigating the creative industry.
We don't have a venture-backed growth team or a content mill. We have a shared Google Doc, a Slack channel that's mostly dog photos, and a genuine desire to make the creative life a little less lonely and a lot more sustainable.
What You'll Find Here
Our content is organized around the things that matter most to working creatives. You'll find articles about the creative process — how to think, experiment, and develop your voice. Practical advice for freelance life — pricing, contracts, client management, and the business skills they don't teach in art school. Deep dives into design, writing, and photography — the craft itself, explored with care. Reviews and recommendations for tools and workflows that actually make a difference. And stories of inspiration and career growth that remind you why you chose this path.
